APPLICATIONS IN AUSTRALIA

The Safe Medication Practice Unit (SMPU) at Queensland Health, Australia has been working with CoDEG to implement its work on practitioner frameworks. The General Level Framework has now been adapted for use and is implemented state-wide in Queensland, Australia. 

A paper published in 2010 reports how the GLF facilitated the improvement in pharmacist's performance.

The SMPU is also working on a Medication Review Project, which aims to develop and implement pharmaceutical review and clinical pharmacy services by January 2008.

 

Advanced Practice developments

A collaborative of pharmacy organisations in Australia have formed the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Framework Steering Committee which works on projects associated with the national competency standards for pharmacists.

Dr Ian Coombes, Director of the Safe Medication Management Unit, Medication Services Queensland (Australia) has been awarded the “Glaxo Medal of Merit Award” for his leading contributions to hospital pharmacy for 2010, for recognition of his aspirational work on competency-based approaches to practitioner development and the foundations of education for improved patient safety.
