HIGHER LEVEL PRACTICE

CoDEG proposes four levels of practice in pharmacy: a registered pharmacist (MRPharmS); a general pharmacist practitioner (GPP); an advanced pharmacist practitioner (APP); and a consultant pharmacist (CP). The latter two levels are collectively referred to as 'higher level' practice.

A strategy to develop registered pharmacists to general level has been implemented by the Joint Programmes Board (JPB). Completion of such a programme will allow access to an advanced training programme. The progress of a practitioner should be mapped using an advanced competency framework which allows judgements to be made on an individual's current level of practice and highlights future developmental needs.

The JPB has developed an Advanced Pharmacy Practice (APP) Programme which is a practitioner-led, performance-based programme devised to support practitioner development in higher level practice.

For further information on advanced practice and new programmes please access the JPB website pages.
