SAFE MEDICATION PRACTICE UNIT, QUEENSLAND HEALTH

The General Level Framework for Evaluation and Feedback on Pharmaceutical Review Activities was adapted from the GLF developed by CoDEG. It was mapped against Australian standards and practice, such as the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia Standards of Practice for Clinical Pharmacy, and the Australian Pharmaceutical Advisory Council (APAC) Continuum of Care Guidelines.

The process was piloted at two hospital sites and the framework was subsequently endorsed by Directors of Pharmacy in October 2006, before statewide implementation in Queensland.

The General Level Framework sets out a series of competencies which incorporate knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours. These competencies have been devised to support the development of pharmacists as safe, effective general level practitioners. A handbook is also available.

Pharmacists are evaluated against this framework by trained evaluators, by means of an accompanied visit to their clinical area. Subsequent feedback facilitates discussion and agreement of training and development needs.
